How can you make your move go smoothly?

The more planning you do, the easier your move will be. This section features some of the things you should think about before you move, such as timing and preparation.

 

Before You Move.

What are some commonly overlooked pre-move arrangements you should make?

Use this helpful checklist as a reminder of the things you may need to do before your moving day.

 

Book the movers:

  • It's a good idea to obtain estimates from several diffferent moving companies.
  • The estimates will depend on whether or not the movers pack everything or just the breakables or you may choose to do all the packing yourself.

If you own your present home:

  • Arrange to have your gas, water and electric meter readings taken on the day you leave.  Have bills forwarded to your new address.
  • Have the oil tank read and filled before your sale closes, if required and provide a receipt to your lawyer for the final adjustmetns.
  • If the water heater is rented make arragnements to have the rental agreements transferred to the purchaser.
  • Disconnect your telephone, cable TV or Satellite.

If you rent your present home:

  • Give your landlord written notice and make arrangements for the return of any deposits.  In Ontario you msut give your landlord 60 days notice from the first of the month. (Laws may vary by province)

At your new home:

  • Make arrangements for the gas, electricity, telephone, cable TV or satellite to be connected on the day the sale closes.

 General:

  • Get change of address cards from the post office and send them out well before moving day
  • Have the post office forward your mail to the new address
  • Cancel any contracted services and pre-authorized cheques
  • Inform newspapers, magazines, gardening and other home services of your move.  Arrange for services at your new address
  • Cancel or transfer social, athletic, civic, religious and business affiliations and memberships.
  • Change the address on your Driver's Licence effective the day of your move
  • Ask your dentist, doctor, pharmacist and optometrist to transfer medical, dental and prescription records
  • Make arrangements to move perishables such as plants
  • Make arrangements to move pets
  • Safely dispose of all flammable liquids
